State officials joined SEMCA Michigan Works! in recognizing Mohamamd Mahdi Ali Zada, an Afghan refugee and dedicated employee at Webasto in Plymouth, for his resilience and career achievements, with a 2025 Michigan Works! Impact Award.

Ali Zada arrived in Michigan after fleeing Afghanistan and was connected to SEMCA Michigan Works! through refugee resettlement services. With support from the SEMCA team and a welcoming environment at Webasto, he secured employment and quickly became a valuable member of the manufacturing team.

“We have successfully placed over 20 Afghan refugees at Webasto’s Plymouth location in various roles,” said Ghani Mirwais, a member of Webasto’s HR team. “Hiring clients with language barriers has been seamless, as the company has leaders in higher positions who speak the same language, providing essential support to refugees in performing their tasks.”

‘Determination and opportunity’

Zada’s story is one of determination and opportunity—proving how inclusive employers and workforce programs can empower new Americans to contribute meaningfully to Michigan’s economy.

“Mohamamd Mahdi Ali Zada’s success reflects the best of what happens when communities come together to support newcomers,” said Senator Sylvia Santana (D-Detroit). “His dedication and work ethic are an inspiration.”

Belonging, support and growth

Ryan Hundt, CEO of the Michigan Works! Association, emphasized the importance of partnership in workforce inclusion:

“Workforce success isn’t just about jobs—it’s about belonging, support, and growth. Mohamamd’s story is a powerful example of what can be achieved when employers, agencies, and communities work together.”

The Michigan Works! Impact Awards bring lawmakers together with talent development leaders to recognize individuals from across the state who have overcome adversity or helped others achieve career success through involvement with the Michigan Works! network.
