After nearly 70 years of watching every NASCAR race, ultimate superfan Shirley Hipple, a resident of Canton’s Waltonwood Carriage Park, got an opportunity to step out of the fan zone and onto the oval track.

On Sept. 18, the 99-year-old Hipple suited up for an official NASCAR Ride-Along and pit tour at Michigan International Speedway.

Hipple knows the names of every driver on the circuit, never misses a race, decorates her room in racing memorabilia and proudly wears her official Jimmie Johnson race jacket.

Through Waltonwood’s “Adventure” program, she experienced authentic horsepower firsthand — an incredible milestone as she also prepares to celebrate her 100th birthday.
